What does it mean when the holidays are behind us? Endless credit card debt! All kidding aside, it means three more months of a cold and dreary winter. The shorter days and sunshine deficit can wreak havoc on your mood, depleting energy and short-changing your health. An estimated 10 million Americans are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and women are four times as likely to suffer as men.
To help see you through the dog days of winter, we’ve compiled a list of clinically-backed self-care tips for adding some wellness into your winter.
Get moving.
You’ve heard this before, but it’s worth repeating! Moving your body is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to boost your mood. Physical activity releases endorphins, bolsters your self-esteem and energy, improves sleep quality and reduces stress. Whether it’s a brisk walk or a dip at the community pool, be sure to do what you love. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, four to five times a week.
Try mood lighting—and our Hemi Sync Lounge!
Light therapy has been clinically shown to improve symptoms of depression, particularly Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Ask your doctor for guidance before investing in a light box (prices range from $30 to over $100). Another interesting option we offer at Skin Care Institute is the Hemi Sync Lounge, a relaxation lounge with music and guided meditations to help you relax and reduce stress. Our complimentary lounge can be enjoyed before or after all of our treatments.
Indulge in you.
Countless studies all point to stress reduction as one of the most important things you can do to decrease your risk for depression. One of our favorite ways to reduce stress is taking time out to treat ourselves to a spa treatment or cosmetic service. We offer a leading range of treatments for every possible need.
