So, how well do you take care of your skin?
Take our skin health quiz to find out!
Q: How often do you apply sunscreen to your face and neck?
A: The right answer here is every day of the year, rain or shine. If you apply sunscreen less than 365 days, it’s a red flag that you need a serious skin care overhaul. Here’s why: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the nation, with over 5 million cases diagnosed every year. One in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. However, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers! This means you have a lot more control than you think! The majority of skin cancer cases—90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancer and 85 percent of melanomas—are the result of exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Since you have control over most of the UV exposure you get, you can dramatically reduce your risk by simply shielding your skin from the sun with the daily application of SPF.
Q: Do you know the ABCDE’s of skin cancer?
A: It’s not the alphabet, but an acronym for the warning signs of skin cancer to help you remember what to look for so you can catch skin cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.
A is for Asymmetry (healthy moles are symmetrical)
B is for Border (healthy moles have clean, not jagged borders
C for Color (healthy moles are usually one color only)
D for Diameter (healthy moles are no larger than the size of an eraser on a pencil tip)
E for Evolution (healthy moles never evolve in shape, size or elevation)
Q: Did you know that early detection saves lives?
The earlier you diagnose skin cancer, the easier it is to treat and the higher your survival rate. Be sure to undergo a skin cancer screening with your primary care physician or dermatologist once a year, and get into the habit of inspecting your moles and freckles for any suspicious changes.
