It may be the season of renewal, but you’re not a plant! If you’re feeling less than refreshed, or even a bit sluggish, we’d like to put some spring in your step (get it?) with a few simple tools, backed by mental health research, of course!
Try something new.
Researchers have actually studied how the brain responds to change, and it turns out that changes in your routine are actually extremely good for not only your mental health, but your mood, as well! Driving a new route to work or getting a haircut are simple ways to get out of a rut. Try eating something new for breakfast or wearing an outfit you never put on. Little changes make all the difference, helping your brain to make new connections and releasing endorphins, feel-good chemicals, which boost your mood.
Put down that donut.
If you’re feeling bogged down, take a good look at your diet. Chances are you’ve been reaching for comfort foods more often than you realize. Refined carbs high in sugar or salty snacks are immediately gratifying, but they do more harm than good in the long run, encouraging overeating and spiking your blood sugar, which can lead to weight gain and low self-esteem. Free yourself from this vicious cycle by cleaning up your diet. Start by reducing or cutting out refined carbs like breads, rolls, muffins, bagels, and donuts while increasing your intake of fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
Treat yourself.
Self-care is the most important thing you can do for yourself, and it should be at the top of your priority list! This means making time for yourself so you can do the things that bring you joy. Every day, make it your goal to do at least one thing for YOU and only YOU. Draw yourself a bath before bed or start a new book you’ve been wanting to read. Or, it could be as small and simple as enjoying a cup of tea! Allotting time for yourself offers a bevy of benefits, lowering your stress level, boosting endorphins, and much, much more!
