There has been a new development in the age old nature vs. nurture skin care debate. A recent study published in the journal Nature suggests that how well (or not well) someone ages is determined by genes passed down from mother to child – or, more specifically, mutated genes.
Scientific researchers observed that children who inherited mutated mitochondrial DNA from their mother’s experienced “accelerated aging.” In other words, they aged quicker and faster, with signs of aging more noticeable than those who did not inherit these mutated genes.
Nature and Nuture
“For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that the aging process is not only affected by damage done to mitochondrial DNA during one’s life (i.e. lifestyle habits) but also by inherited damaged DNA from their mothers,” ScienceDaily.com asserted. Scientists are currently hard at work investigating whether reducing these mutations at the cell level can slow the aging process.
