When it comes to aesthetic treatments, we see and hear a lot from our patients, who entrust us with their care because we value honesty and transparency for every service we provide. Sometimes, we notice a trend. For example, we’ll hear a persistent misperception concerning certain services. Botox® is a perfect example of one treatment that inspires confusion or “myths.”
This month, we felt inspired to set the record straight about a few stubborn Botox myths, and share how we can help you achieve optimal results.
Myth #1: If you stop Botox, your wrinkles will become worse.
Reality check: Stopping Botox treatments will NOT make your wrinkles worse. This myth reminds us of the shaving myth. Many people are convinced that shaving makes their hair grow in thicker and coarser, but shaving only removes the hair blade; it has no ability to alter the type of hair you grow. With Botox, you are injecting a neuromodulator into specific areas of your face to relax muscle movement. By relaxing said muscles, you are allowing your skin a period of rest, so to speak. Stopping Botox doesn’t make your muscles more active, it simply allows them to return to normal. If anything, Botox can help to improve your wrinkles even after you stop using it. This is because while you are using Botox, your wrinkles aren’t getting worse; you are essentially hitting the pause button on the progression of your wrinkles.
Myth #2: Botox is painful.
Reality check: Many patients are fearful of Botox because it involves a needle, not realizing just how tiny and well-tolerated the Botox needle truly is. First, our master injector will ask you to crinkle up your face, causing wrinkles to form. This allows us to see exactly where you need the Botox to be injected. We will then administer Botox to those precise locations. The injection process is surprisingly quick and easy. The Botox needle essentially feels like a series of tiny pricks to the skin. Our master injectors have successfully administered thousands of Botox treatments, so we know how to administer Botox to maximize your comfort while minimizing side effects like swelling or bruising.
Myth #3: Botox builds up in your body over time.
Reality check: Botox affords up to four months of benefits. Botox does not linger in your system. In order to enjoy long-term benefits, you’ll need to undergo follow-up treatments every three to four months or so.
Myth #4: Botox makes you look fake and frozen.
Reality check: This is one of the most persistent myths about Botox that won’t seem to go away. Botox is an FDA-approved neuromodulator that helps to inhibit muscle activity in targeted areas. The truth is, people can look “fake” and “frozen,” but it shouldn’t be blamed on Botox. When patients go to inexperienced injectors, they are at risk of being injected with too much product, which can result in an unnatural look. The truth is, when administered correctly, you’ll never look fake or frozen.
You can protect yourself from “bad” results by seeking treatment with only master injectors who have undergone advanced training in techniques and facial anatomy.
