Summer fun in the sun is great for getting you up and moving, but spending so much time outdoors makes practicing smart skin care more vital than ever. We can’t stress this enough – your skin needs constant protection! Here are some of our favorite summer skin care tips to help keep your skin protected and looking luminous for the dog days of August ahead.
Always wear sunscreen!
Without a doubt, the most important part of your skin care routine all year round should be the daily application of a physical sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide (or a mix of both). SPF protection is your best defense against the summer sun and your most vital beauty secret. Not only does sunscreen protect your skin from sunburns and lower your risk of skin cancer, it also helps keep your skin looking younger longer, preventing almost 90 percent of the signs of aging. Make sure your sunscreen has an SPF of 30 or greater with both UVA and UVB protection (known as ‘broadband’ coverage). And remember—it’s important to wear it all day long—whether the sun is out or behind the clouds—and reapply often.
Drink Green Tea.
Green tea is a skin-loving beverage because it’s loaded with polyphenols, which help reduce inflammation, as well as protective antioxidants, which help fend off free-radical damage, preserving the health of your skin cells.
Eat more summer fruits.
If you love watermelon, you’re going to love this news: watermelon is packed with antioxidants, which help protect skin from UV radiation! Watermelon also contains lots of water (in case the name wasn’t a hint!), so it helps keep you hydrated during the hotter months. Other summer fruits like strawberries, blackberries and kiwi are rich in Vitamin C and phytonutrients, which act like a natural sunblock, helping to prevent burning. (Remember—fruit consumption is not a replacement for daily SPF!)
